Talk by Mike Carey: Time in Science Fiction
«The future, in fiction, is a metaphor». So said Ursula LeGuin. But science fiction’s obsession with time merits deeper digging. Orwell’s 1984 deliberately makes time problematic in a number of ways, and for a modern audience those conundrums are compounded by our distance from his original story – and by our proximity to it! Using 1984 as a starting point, this talk explores how speculative fiction frames the human experience of time.
